MEDICALLY SUPERVISED WEIGHT LOSS WITH TIRZEPATIDE (MOUNJARO)

  • Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is a powerful new type 2 diabetes drug shown to be extremely effective for weight loss. It was recently approved for diabetes and is awaiting FDA approval for the primary treatment of obesity. It is a dual incretin agonist or a “twincreatin” that acts on TWO hunger hormone receptors: GIP and GLP-1.

  • In a press release from Eli Lilly in April of 2022, “GIP is a hormone that may complement the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists. In preclinical models, GIP has been shown to decrease food intake and increase energy expenditure therefore resulting in weight reductions, and when combined with GLP-1 receptor agonism, may result in greater effects on markers of metabolic dysregulation such as body weight, glucose and lipids.”

  • Data from the first and largest of Lilly’s pivotal trials showed participants taking tirzepatide lost as much as 25 pounds on average over 40 weeks (with additional lifestyle modifications). Those who continued beyond 40 weeks, lost as much as 52 pounds! The average weight loss with tirzepatide is an astonishing 22.5%.

  • The manufacturer was offering a coupon that lowered the price to $25 per month for anyone who had a valid prescription. On 10/1/22, the coupon was changed and now requires a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes to be honored.

  • We are able to offer a compounded version of tirzepatide that also contains added Vitamin b12. The side effects of tirzepatide are like GLP-1 medications and includes nausea and gastrointestinal disturbance. Most side effects are brief when the medication is started at the lowest dose and slowly increased over time. Like semaglutide, the medication is taken as a once-a-week nearly painless injection.

  • Tirzepatide targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and satiety (sense of fullness after eating). It slows food digestion in the stomach, decreases appetite, diminishes food cravings, and increases feeling of fullness so you eat less and lose weight.

  • Tirzepatide lowers blood pressure, improves blood sugars, improves insulin resistance, and reduces inflammation. It also lowers Hemoglobin A1C levels and enhance the function of β cells in the pancreas.

  • Treatment starts at a low dose and is increased slowly. This helps to improve tolerance and decrease side effects of the medication.

  • Individual results vary and results are not guaranteed

All About Treatment with Tirzepatide

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is a dual incretin agonist or a “twincreatin” that acts on TWO hunger hormone receptors: GIP and GLP-1. These target areas of the brain and gut that regulate appetite and satiety (sense of fullness after eating). In 2022, it was released as an anti-diabetic medication used to treat type 2 diabetes under the name Mounjaro It was recently given "Fast Track" designation by the FDA in order to speed up the development and expedite the review to approve Mounjaro for the treatment of obesity.

Unfortunately, a lot of medications used to treat obesity are not usually covered by insurance and the cost of Mounjaro is currently approximately $1000 per month. Our terzepatide is specially compounded version that costs significantly less than the branded version.

Tirzepatide treatment is a once a week subcutaneous (SQ) injection which is typically injected into the abdominal fat. SQ injections are VERY easy to do and usually painless! Most patients learn how to do this during the first visit.

HOW IT WORKS:

1) Schedule your FREE 15 min phone or video consultation

2) Labs may be required if not done within the past 12 months. After phone consult, schedule your initial in-office visit.

3) One week follow up to receive your medication and how to administer it

4) Two week follow up to review how to draw up and administer injection (if needed).

5) Follow-up office visit, telemed, or phone call every 4 weeks

5) Labs and in-office visit every 3 months

The most common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Decreased appetite
  • Indigestion
  • stomach (abdominal) pain
  • In people with type 2 diabetes, semaglutide can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

Risks Associated with Tirzepatide

The medication should not be used in anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), because there is an increased risk of developing thyroid C-cell tumors. You are NOT a good candidate if you currently have or have had in the past any of the following: diabetic retinopathy, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), poor kidney function, or pancreatitis,

There is also an increased risk of other complications including:

  • Kidney problems (kidney failure). In people who have kidney problems, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may cause a loss of fluids (dehydration) which may cause kidney problems to get worse. It is important for you to drink fluids to help reduce your chance of dehydration.
  • Severe stomach problems. Stomach problems, sometimes severe, have been reported. Tell your healthcare provider if you have stomach problems that are severe or will not go away.
  • Changes in vision. Tell your healthcare provider if you have changes in vision.
  • Gallbladder problems. Gallbladder problems have happened in some people. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get symptoms of gallbladder problems which may include: Pain in your upper stomach (abdomen), fever, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), clay-colored stools

This is an excellent video that demonstrates step-by-step exactly how to draw up and inject medication subcutaneously. Highly recommended and the New Zealand accent makes it fun!
